Tom Hirt made the hat worn by Sam Elliott in his role as Conn Conagher in the 1991 movie, Conagher. Sam described his character as a purist cowboy with a dedication to tradition and honesty. A cowboy living in a time when a handshake meant something. Tom designed a perfectly fitting hat for Sam that also captured Sam’s character in the movie.

Four hats are generally made for movie making; two for the actor, one for the double, and one extra as a back-up. Some years after the movie was released, Sam called Tom to tell him that one of the original Conagher hats was auctioned for $15,000. More recently, the Conn Conagher costume with another of the original hats was donated to the National Cowboy and Western Museum in Oklahoma where it is still on display. Credit was given to Tom as the original hat maker.

Tom has created a limited edition of 55 Conagher hats that are for sale now. Each hat includes Sam Elliott’s original autograph on the sweatband and is made from 100% beaver fur. The hat color is natural, which means it has not been dyed. Each hat includes a fine sheepskin leather sweatband, a silk satin hat liner, and is stored in a traditional lined vintage-style hat box.

The introductory price of $4,500 is valid until Christmas, 2026.
